Itanium Delayed Again While Intel Improves It

Itanium Delayed Again While Intel Improves It

It's hard to say if there is anything to this, but it's certainly interesting at the very least. For years now, Intel has been notoriously good at shipping its products on time. If Intel says a chip is coming in a certain quarter in a certain year, it'll be there. On the other hand, AMD has been the polar opposite; year after year, the chip maker has announced delay after delay, spoiling even the hopes of diehard fanatics.

Now, however, the tables seem to be turning, albeit slightly. While Intel's dealing with a $1.45 billion fine, Advanced Micro Devices is enjoying the success of its Neo platform and finally holding its head up high. Furthermore, Intel is now delaying a chip of its own -- for the second time.If you'll recall, its next generation Itanium chip line was originally scheduled to launch in early 2009, and now that said time window has come and gone, we're hearing of yet another setback. Now, Intel is saying that Tukwila won't hit the market until Q1 2010, and we're beginning to wonder how serious it is even about that.

Still, Intel's spinning this in a way that makes it seem at least somewhat responsible here. In a statement, the company said that "during final system-level testing, we identified an opportunity to further enhance application scalability." In other words, we're being forced to wait because Intel is improving upon the product. Sure, that sounds fantastic, but it can only work in the court of public opinion for so long. Meanwhile, AMD's taking the opportunity to boast about the early release of Istanbul -- got to love the rival instinct, don't you?

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Processor

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Processor

Over the course of a few months in late 2007 and early-to-mid 2008, AMD unveiled their Spider platform, consisting of AMD-built desktop processors, chipsets, and graphics Cards, and refreshed said platform with faster processors and graphics cards. Fast forward to today, and AMD is doing the same thing, but this time with the newer, more powerful Dragon platform. It's like Déjà Vu all over again, as they say.

Even though some components have been available for much longer, the complete Dragon platform--consisting of Radeon HD 4000 series graphics, 7-series chipsets, and Phenom II processors--has been around since January of this year, when the Phenom II first arrived. Since the initial launch, AMD has updated the GPU portion of the platform with the excellent Radeon HD 4890, i.e. RV790, and introduced mainstream socket AM3 processors. And today, AMD ups the ante yet again with the highest clocked quad-core CPU to be offered by the company to date, the 3.2GHz Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition.

We've got one of AMD's new flagship desktop processors in house for a little benchmark action and have clocked it down to 3.0GHz as well to simulate the performance of the Phenom II X4 945, which is also arriving alongside the 955 BE. Read on for the full scoop...

Intel Partners With Novell To Push Moblin OS

Intel Partners With Novell To Push Moblin OS

t's been some time yet since we've heard anything new regarding Intel's homegrown Moblin operating system, but just when you thought that Intel (and the industry at large, really) was letting go of all hope when it comes to UMPCs and MIDs, in flies this. Despite the fact that netbooks have entirely overshadowed highly portable pocket PCs, Intel and Novell are still forging ahead with plans to produce Moblin-based products with Intel's Atom processors.

Believe it or not, Moblin has been around since 2007, yet it has gone almost nowhere since launching. Novell's contributions to the Moblin ecosystem include (and will include): leading the open source development of key operating system features such as window, e-mail and media management. Details about actual products and release dates have yet to be revealed, but we're definitely glad to see Intel teaming up with others in order to really light the fire under Moblin. Intel has had years to get this right, and already it looks like we'll see Android-based netbooks before Moblin-based netbooks, despite a huge disparity in preparation time. Nothing like a little competition to really get the gears turning, right?

The Core 2 Extreme QX9650

The Core 2 Extreme QX9650
The latest high-end processor from Intel is the Core 2 Extreme QX9650. It is a quad-core chip running at 3 GHz produced on a 45 nanometer assembly line. It has a total of 12 megabytes of cache on the chip. Here is a complete review, including a summary of the 45 nm production process:
Penryn Arrives: Core 2 Extreme QX9650 Review
In this article they were able to boost the memory speed to 1600 MHz and overclock the chip to 3.6 GHz (a 20% increase) without any trouble, which bodes well for the speed of future chips.
Here are two other announcements:
- Intel’s 45nm Penryn/Yorkfield architecture packs serious punch- Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650
- Penryn Ticks Ahead
The Anandtech article talks about the future: “The other important item to note on the roadmap going forward is that top line in the table - yep, the one that says Bloomfield. Bloomfield is none other than Nehalem, the 45nm successor to Penryn. It’s a brand new architecture complete with an on-die memory controller, SMT (Symmetric Multi-Threading - 2 threads per core) and 8MB of shared cache (probably L3 shared among all four cores). While it’s still a year away, it’s very nice to see it on an Intel roadmap this far in advance of its launch.” That chip will probably crack the billion transistor barrier.

penryn processors

penryn processors
More details are emerging on Intel's next-gen Penryn processors, said to benefit greatly in terms of processing power and energy consumption by mixing the Core microarchitecture with the 45nm Hi-k and hafnium metal gate designs.
This article in Enterprise Networks and Servers, authored by Intel, offers the latest scoop on the six new Penryn designs, plus two new Xeon quads. The company looks like it's throwing everything but the kitchen sink into these designs, leveraging advanced power management and dynamic acceleration and throwing in streaming video and enhanced instruction set architectures. NewsFactorNetwork reports that Penryn will jam twice as many transistors in 25 percent less space than comparable systems.
Details on the Nehelem chips, due out in 2008, are included at Enterprise Networks and Servers. Get ready for dynamic management of the cores, threads, cache and interface, as well as simultaneous multi-threading and new SSE4 and ATA instruction set additions.
